Tripura Govt grants varsity status to ICFAI

Hyderabad , June 21

THE Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) has announced that it has established its third State University in Tripura.

The ICFAI New Initiatives Group Chief, Mr Siva Ram Mallela, told presspersons here on Saturday evening that the Government of Tripura notified the ICFAI University Agartala on June 15. The University would be formally inaugurated in July, he said.

Earlier, the Tripura State Legislature passed the ICFAI University, Tripura Act 2004 under the provisions of which the University was notified, Mr Siva Ram said.

According to him, the ICFAI University in Agartala is the third University in the network of Universities being established by the ICFAI in different States in the country. While the ICFAI University Raipur was established in 2002, the ICFAI University Dehradun was set up last year.

Mr Siva Ram said the ICFAI has made applications for the establishment of Universities with 20 States across the country. Among them, the Governments of Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa and Sikkim have positively considered the applications and the ICFAI expects to set up Universities in these states by the end of current year.

"The objective of establishing Universities in different States is in consonance with the objective of ICFAI to promote good quality higher education in different States, giving emphasis to disciplines that meet the specific skill requirements in each State," Mr Siva Ram said.

In its University in Agartala, the ICFAI proposes to initially commence programmes in engineering in the areas of electrical and electronics, electronics and communications and computer science, B.Com and BBA. The other programmes would be launched from the academic year 2005-06, he said.

The Government of Tripura has identified 25 acres of land near Agartala for locating the campus of the ICFAI University, which would be acquired at an early date.

The Government is currently assisting the University in securing suitable building space for commencement of programmes of the University from August this year. The first phase of the ICFAI's University in Agartala is expected to be ready by July next year, Mr Siva Ram said.
