THE Union Government has initiated steps for bringing out an integrated food law to help achieve international standards in food processing.
This was stated by the Joint Secretary, Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Mr Arun Kumar, at an interactive session with the members of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Mangalore.
At present, nine ministries deal with food processing aspects, and the Government is trying to see that a uniform law is formed. The integrated law will help in bringing more foreign direct investments to this sector, he said.
He said that steps are being taken to clear the number of proposals pending before the Government on food processing industries. He hoped that all the pending proposals would be cleared in a few months.
To a question by Mr Srinivas Achar of the All-India Arecanut Growers' Association on lack of growth in arecanut market, Mr Kumar said that his department could sponsor research activities on arecanut market. There were requests by the members of food processing sector here to bring down taxes on processed food sector. The KCCI President, Mr R.D. Kini, welcomed the gathering.
