New Delhi , June 22

INTEL on Tuesday launched a range of chipsets and microprocessors for improved audio, video and graphics experience for personal computer (PC) users.

"This evolution will help people to better enjoy digital music, photos, videos and games on PCs and other devices," Mr Ketan Sampat, President, Intel (India), said at a news conference here.

Intel, which had earlier announced a $200-million digital home fund for the companies worldwide in the networked personal computers and consumer electronics market, is also in the process of evaluating companies in India in this regard, Mr Sampat said.

Intel also launched three new chipsets - 915P and 915G, targeted at the mainstream PCs, and 925X targeted at the gaming segment.

It has also launched several Pentium 4 processors that support hyper-threading technology.

These technologies help create an all-in-one hi-fi device with high-definition video, high fidelity sound and wireless connectivity, added Mr Sampat.

Hyper-threading is a technology that allows a single microprocessor to act like two separate processors to the operating system and the application programs that use it.

All these products are aimed at improving the digital home and office experiences.

Intel sees the market growing particularly in the backdrop of increasing broadband and wireless penetration.

With around 70 million digital cameras likely to be sold worldwide in 2004, billions of digital photographs are finding their way to the PCs, the company said. Additionally, Internet is being used to download digitised content in the forms of movies and songs.

All this, together, would drive the use of PC as an entertainment device.

The company has hired about 500 people in its India development centre in the first six months of 2004, taking the total headcount to around 2,000.

The company will continue to hire more professionals in India, Mr Sampat said, but refused to divulge any specific details.
