Letters Reservation of jobs
The private sector aims at maximising productivity vis-à-vis efficiency and profit and there is no room for complacency. An investor-friendly government cannot insist on the kind of labour to be employed by the prospective investor. Instead, the government can give sops such as the 80G (IT) relief for private sector units coming forward to contribute their resources to cater to the educational uplift of the backward communities in educational institutions set up by the Centre. It is now 55 years since the country became independent. However, the backward classes still continue to suffer. The Government must fix the economic problems of the such people and ensure that many of the benefits that ought to reach them actually do. It is always the economically affluent among the backward sections that do well and get better jobs. It would be better to arm the really poor and disadvantaged among the backward classes with education and other measures rather than trying to play politics with them. They should not be treated merely as vote banks. S. Srinath Chennai Letters to the editor and contributions can be sent by e-mail to: bleditor@thehindu.co.in
