Nanguneri park may get new lease of life

Our Correspondent

Madurai , June 24

THE Nanguneri hi-tech park project in Tirunelveli district seems to see the lights again.

The project would be implemented in three or four years with the co-operation from the State Government, the Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industries, Mr E.V.K.S. Elangovan, has said.

Speaking to reporters at Tirunelveli, Mr Elangovan observed that the project would not be allowed to die for political reasons, as it is capable of bringing about a meaningful change in the life of people in the southern districts.

A special officer would be appointed to monitor the progress of the scheme and efforts would be made to secure a significant allocation for the project. To encourage the establishment of units in the park, a tax holiday for a specific period would be given, he added.

The park, conceived in an area of over 3,000 acreswas to have been developed by the Advanced Technology Manufacturing And Assembly City (ATMAC) of the California-based INFAC Management Corporation and a non-resident Indian firm, Axes Technology.

The Union Minister further said that the proposal to set up a Special Economic Zone at Tuticorin Port Trust would receive priority attention. The leather industries at Ambur in the Vellore district would be clubbed to form a huge leather-techno park.
