Mumbai , June 24

The Department of Agriculture, Gujarat has set a sowing target of 88 lakh hectares for the current kharif season as against 86 lakh hectares over previous season, up by 2 lakh hectares.

Sowing for various kharif crops in the State such as groundnut, cotton, sesame and pulses is in progress, thanks to good rains.

As on June 21, kharif sowing has been completed in 13.58 lakh hectares (lh) as against total target area of 88 lh.

Kharif sowing has commenced in most parts of South Gujarat, Saurashtra-Kutch regions and North Gujarat as the State has received adequate and timely rains.

Major crops covered under current kharif sowing in the State are groundnut, cotton, bajra, maize and sesame, as per latest figures released by the department.
