DOCTORS of Care Hospitals have performed a rare cardiac surgery and saved the life of a 53-year-old patient suffering from aortic dissection (splitting of the wall of the main blood vessel of the body).

``This is the most lethal form of disease affecting the Aorta of the heart. More than 50 per cent of patients die within 48 hours as gushing blood in between in the split layers block the movement of heart and cut off blood supply to important parts of the body,'' Dr Gopichand Mannam, who lead the team, said.

Addressing a news conference here, he said the surgery carried risk levels of 90 per cent because of the complexity involved. "The surgery is risky, but then it is the only solution to correct the problem. We need to stop blood supply for 50 minutes during the six-hour surgery," he said.

``The uniqueness of this operation is that blood vessels going to the upper limbs, head and brain are also involved.
