Mumbai port awarded ISPS certificate

Our Bureau

Mumbai , June 25

WITH five more days to go before the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code becomes mandatory, the Mumbai port has been declared ISPS code compliant by the Directorate General of Shipping.

The port being located on the periphery of the main city and commercial areas, it is vulnerable to infiltration due to the vast perimeter boundary wall, access points from land-side and proximity to private commercial and residential buildings. Also, it has a large water front area, with lots of inland and coastal vessels plying.

"All these constitute high potential risk to the security and safety of the port. Compiling a Port Facility Security Plan (PFSP) and executing it was therefore a mammoth task. Mumbai is one of the 20 per cent of international ports, which have been issued the compliance certificate till date," according to a senior port official.
