TN technocrats produce bio-diesel from non-edible veg oil

Our Correspondent

Madurai , June 25

FOUR technocrats have successfully produced bio-diesel from non-edible vegetable oil in a pilot project under the New Anna Marumalarchi Thittam (NAMT) at Vembakottai near Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district .

The oil extracted from rubber seed and converted to mythyl easters has been tested on tractors, power tillers and gensets, it said.

According to a report, two technocrats, Mr S. Lakshminarayanan and Mr M.I. Samy of Fabrichem, Tiruchi, joined hands with two entrepreneurs from Sivakasi, Mr R. Umakanth and Mr R. Viyayakanth and set up a plant at a cost of Rs 2 lakh under NAMT and started the operations early this year. It is said that the bio-diesel produced has the same density as the regular mineral diesel and has been tested by IIT, Chennai.

According to Mr Samy, Project Coordinator, the bio-diesel is 25 per cent more fuel-efficient than the regular diesel and effluent-free and costs around Rs 23.50, roughly Rs 2 less than the regular diesel. If the project became viable commercially, it can generate massive employment in the rural areas, help develop wastelands, reduce dependency on imported diesel and earn precious foreign exchange for the country.

The State Industries Commissioner and the Director of Industries and Commerce have given the approval for the production of bio-diesel from non-edible oil seeds under NAMT, the report added.
