Letters Nuclear power
This is with reference to the editorial "Private sector in nuclear power" (Business Line, June 24). While some developed countries have been producing nuclear power as in France where it is understood to be a major source of electricity, it is not without very serious consequences. The tragic experience of Chernobyl is too recent to forget. No doubt nuclear power can be cheap and eco-friendly compared to thermal generation. These are secondary when no one can guarantee against human failures. The location of such plants may have to be chosen with great care to avoid fault lines where natural calamity like an earthquake can aggravate the disaster. It is such dangers that possibly stand in the way of the wide use of this source of power all over the world. Above all the disposal of nuclear waste in an acceptable manner is yet another hurdle. K.
