CII sets up task force on Pondy infrastructure

Chennai , June 27

THE Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has taken up the lack of infrastructure facilities such as road, water, transportation, and air and rail links, which have been a problem for business visitors to Pondicherry.

A task force on infrastructure constituted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Pondicherry State Council, will highlight this deficiency to the Government.

In a statement, Mr Umesh R. Shoney, Chairman, CII Pondicherry State Council, said that the task force has reviewed four areas for improvement in Pondicherry.

The first of these is the water and road management in the industrial estate. The relaying of the Mylam Road portion between TCB Koot Road and Sedarapert Industrial Estate with participation from the Pondicherry Government has started.

To ease congestion inside Pondicherry town, the task force felt that a bypass road from the East Coast Road was necessary.

The press release said that Pondicherry is not easily accessible by air, rail or sea. Air links are only available up to Chennai. Though there is a port, ships cannot berth due to inadequate draught. The rail link via Villupuram is circuitous and takes too much time, the press release said.

The issues that the task force will follow up are a rail link between Tindivanam, Pondicherry and Cuddalore, widening the roads connecting the industrial estates to the city, a truck terminal, a satellite market and private participation in most social activities.
