List of trees fit for biodiesel

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , June 28

THERE are more than 50 kinds of trees in India that can produce non-edible oil, which can be used as bio-diesel. Among them are the Jatropha, Pongamia, Mahua, Neem, Tumba, Sal, Jajoba and Chullu.

However, in terms of yields and oil content in seed, Jatropha is the best among all such trees, according to a book by Mr Gade Veera Reddy, which was released by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, here on Monday.

The book on biodiesel trees, written in Telugu, states that the trees survive even in drought-prone areas and last for 40 to 100 years. Except for the first year, the farmers need not invest much money on cultivation of these trees. Being non-edible, animals and birds do not eat the fruits and seeds of the trees.

Incidentally, the State Government has plans to cover 2 lakh acres of land this year with plantations that can produce raw material for biodiesel. More than 15 companies are stated to have shown interest so far in establishing biodiesel processing plants in the State.
