Travel agents' body to boycott Tourism Malaysia road show

Our Bureau

Chennai , June 28

THE Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), Southern Region, will boycott the Tourism Malaysia road show in Chennai on Tuesday to protest the bank guarantee imposed on travel agents by the Malaysian High Commission in India.

Mr R.A. Govindaradjalou, Chairman, Southern Region, TAAI, said that on February 16, the Malaysian High Commission asked the travel agents for a bank guarantee of Rs 3.50 lakh as a safeguard against illegal immigrants and visitors overstaying. This was being tried out as a pilot project first in Chennai, and is to be introduced in other cities.

He said that since then there had been several representations made by travel agents both in person and in writing to the consular officials in Chennai.

They had also appealed to the Malaysian Government not to bring in the bank guarantee.

Mr Govindaradjalou said that if collective action is not taken at this juncture to stall this demand for a bank guarantee, it might encourage the consulates of other countries to follow suit.
