Reduce poverty

This is with reference to the editorial "Not by Credit alone" (Business Line, June 28). The enhancement of institutional credit to the farmers is welcome. At the same time, it is essential to ensure that the credit is targeted at the "poor and truly needy" (as spelt out in the Common Minimum Programme).

At present, the credit-delivery machinery is more inclined towards lending to large-holders or rich `landless' people rather than to smallholders.
