Letters The data paradox
This with reference to "Data Issues: Who said they hardly matter?" (Business Line, June 24, 2004). The article is timely because this is Budget season and the policy-makers are grappling with statistics. There are enormous deficiencies in the availability and accessibility of authentic statistics with reference to various dimensions of the economy. As a researcher, I experienced this problem when I had to do a `cost-benefit analysis on the expenditure incurred in collecting and preparing the population census every 10 years'. I could not find any official statistics on the total expenditure incurred in this exercise. I strongly endorse the need for a `Statutory Statistical Commission', as the article suggests. S .K.
