Jet seeks to rope in Changi in Delhi, Mumbai airport revamp

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi , July 5

THE list of suitors interested in participating in the modernisation and restructuring of Delhi and Mumbai airports is all set to expand.

The country's leading private sector airline, Jet Airways, is scheduled to meet officials of Singapore's world-famous Changi Airport later this week about participating in the Government's efforts to modernise the airports at the two metros.

The meeting, which has been confirmed by sources, comes just days ahead of the July 20 deadline set by the authorities for submission of expression of interest for the metro airport modernisation project.

The Union Cabinet, while limiting the foreign direct investment to 49 per cent, allowed domestic airlines to pick up a 10 per cent stake in the project, up from 5 per cent, which had been proposed earlier by the NDA Government.

The private sector airline joins a distinguished list of suitors, which includes a consortium of GMR, Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide and the India Development Fund and the Sunil Mittal-owned Bharti Group which has formed a consortium with Changi Airport of Singapore who plan to bid for the modernisation programme of Delhi and Mumbai airports.

Sources indicated that participating in the modernisation programme could make an interesting source of revenue for the consortium especially if it were allowed to offer services to others.

The Government has already stipulated that while a consortium can put in bids for both the metro airports, it will not be allowed to take over Mumbai and Delhi airport. At the time of putting in their bids, the consortium will have to specify whether it is more keen on running the Delhi or Mumbai airport.
