Indal hails move to use aluminium in rail wagons

Kolkata , July 6

INDIAN Aluminium Company Ltd (Indal) of the Aditya Birla Group has commended the Union Railway Minister, Mr Laloo Prasad Yadav, for pointing out in his Budget speech that the use of aluminium in the manufacture of railway wagons will be encouraged.

In a statement, the President & CEO of Indal, Dr S.K. Tamotia, said that for quite some time, Indal had been actively involved in the development of this application. The aluminium railway wagons being developed would replace six tonnes of steel with three tonnes of aluminium and because of the unique properties of aluminium, this would reduce the fare weight by three tonnes, thereby increasing the per wagon payload.

He said that the trial orders had already been placed by the Research Design & Standards Organisation of the Union Railway Ministry.

Although the cost for aluminium wagons would be higher by about Rs 3 lakh vis-à-vis steel wagons, the pay-back period would be less than three years, he pointed out.
