Hyderabad , July 7

THE Railway Budget presented by Mr Lalu Prasad Yadav on Tuesday envisaged an outlay of Rs 300 crore for the ongoing projects in the South Central Railway (SCR) zone during the financial year 2004-05.

While nine new railway line projects were alotted Rs 62.01 crore, gauge conversion works on six routes got Rs 102.90 crore and doubling works on six routes were earmarked Rs 135.06 crore.

Giving a break-up of AP's share in the Budget at a press conference on Tuesday, Mr Stanley Babu, General Manager of SCR, said the 1,000-km target for gauge conversion in the country included Manoharabad-Nizamabad of Secunderabad-Mudkhed section and Adilabad-Kinwat of Mudkhed-Adilabad section.

The target for taking up 381-km long doubling works included works on the Hospet-Tornagallu-Bellary section and Hagari-Guntakal sections.

The proposed survey to identify 18 new railway lines would include Machilipatnam-Repalle and Jaggayyapet-Vishnupuram sections, he said.

Of the proposed 17 Sampark Kranti Expresses, Andhra Pradesh got one that would connect Delhi (Nizamuddin) to Secunderabad.

The Hyderabad-Ernakulam Sabari Express would be extended to Kochuvelli during the year.

The frequency of Yeshwantpur-Nizamuddin Karnataka Sampark Kranti Express (via Secunderabad) would be increased from tri-weekly to daily. On the safety front, the Railways would "progressively" introduce `Tight lock center buffer couplers' on coaches that would help passengers prevent from climbing over each other in case of an accident.

These coaches would be introduced in Hyderabad-New Delhi Andhra Pradesh Express, Visakhapatnam-Hyderabad Godavari Express, Hyderabad-Chennai Charminar Express and Chennai-New Delhi Tamil Nadu Express.

Meanwhile, both the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, criticised the Budget for giving a raw deal to the State in allocations.
