Southern Rlys seeks cooperation

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Southern Railways has sought the cooperation of the public for taking up construction of the proposed satellite terminal at Kochuveli as part of decongesting Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station.

The satellite terminal at Kochuveli was originally approved in 2002-2003 and an amount of Rs 8 crore was allocated in the last year's Budget. According to the Railways, volume of goods traffic has been declining during the past years. It was hence decided that the existing goods shed be dismantled for setting up the satellite terminal after diverting the goods traffic at Kochuveli to other stations.

Retention of goods shed and the goods lines at Kochuveli would affect the proposed expansion of passenger facilities. Handling goods and passenger traffic simultaneously at the present facility would be a safety hazard, according to the Railways.
