Kerala Minister hints at water harvesting scheme

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Water Resources Minister, Mr T.M. Jacob, has said that the State Government will try to bring Kerala under the pilot national scheme for water harvesting announced in the Union Budget.

Despite recording 3,000 mm of rain on an annual average, the per capita availability of rainwater and clean drinking water was the lowest in Kerala. The State received rain for 100 days at a stretch, and the distinctive topography resulted in the entire rainwater running off into the sea within one hour of impacting the surface. This had led to drying of entire riverbeds during the summer months starting March.

Rainwater harvesting is the only means left to try and retain water over a one-hectare area in each panchayat in the State
