WTO Kamal Nath to attend Paris, Mauritius meet on WTO talks Our Bureau
New Delhi , July 9 IN the run-up to the general council meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) scheduled in the third week of this month in Geneva to break the logjam on the negotiating modalities of talks on various agreements under the Doha Development Agenda, the Union Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, is going to Paris and the Mauritius to engage with major agricultural producers as well as the least developed countries. An official release here stated that in respect of agriculture negotiations in the WTO, Ministers from various WTO Members have been holding discussions in smaller groups either to determine collective strategy on areas of common interests and concerns or to develop solutions where divergence remains strong. In this regard, the Paris meeting of non-group (NG) 5 comprising Australia, Brazil, the European Union (EU), India and the US on July 10-11 would discuss key outstanding issues in the three pillars in farm trade talks. In a step forward, the Paris meeting would consider possible solutions and alternatives to resolve the key outstanding issues. On July 12, Mr Nath would take part in the Mauritius meeting of the Group-90, a group composed of the least developed countries (LDCs), the African Union and the ACP (Africa, Caribbean and the Pacific) countries. The Port Louis meeting on July 12 assumes significance as cooperation between G-90 and the G-20 is vital for achieving the establishment of a new global trading order, supportive of the aspirations of the developing world.
