Eco clearance mandatory for large constructions

Our Bureau

New Delhi , July 10

TO check the adverse impact on environment, the Ministry of Environment and Forests has mandated an environmental clearance for specified large constructions.

Such constructions include new or upcoming industrial townships, settlement colonies, commercial complexes, hotel complexes, hospitals, industrial estates and office complexes, meant for over 1,000 persons. Of these, units which discharge sewage of over 50,000 litres per day or involve an investment of Rs 50 crore or more would also be required to obtain environmental clearance, an official statement here said.

The Ministry notification will also affect those projects where construction work has not commenced up to the plinth level and new industrial estates where construction work has not commenced or the expenditure does not exceed 25 per cent of the total sanctioned cost.

The Government has modified the Environmental Impact Assessment guidelines through a notification to include these constructions.
