Mergers & Acquisitions Flextronics in buy-out talks with Emuzed?
Bharat Kumar
Chennai/Bangalore , July 11 FOLLOWING its purchase of 55 per cent shares in Hughes Software Systems, Flextronics is said to be in talks to acquire Emuzed. The latter "develops and sells multimedia products and technologies for the PC multimedia and embedded multimedia markets", according to www.emuzed.com. It says that Mr Shankar Narayanan is one of the co-founders of the company. Sources said that both Flextronics and Emuzed have agreed "in-principle" to the arrangement. It is still not clear if a formal agreement or a deal size has been reached. Emuzed declined to comment on the buy-out talks. "I have nothing to say on this now," a top Emuzed official in India said. Emuzed is headquartered in California, has a research and development centre in India and employs about 150 people. Hughes Software is a provider of software and services to telecom infrastructure companies. With Emuzed's focus on the device side, including handsets, Flextronics could expand the breadth of expertise in the telecom arena with such an acquisition, sources said. Speculation has also been rife that Flextronics will be interested in acquiring Future Software, a Chennai-based provider of software solutions to the telecom industry. At the time, Mr K.V. Ramani, Chairman, Future Soft, said refused to comment on the issue. Late last month, Flextronics entered into an agreement with Nortel Networks to acquire a bulk of the latter's manufacturing facilities. The deal size was pegged between $675 million and $725 million.
