Plea to cancel Hindustan Insecticides Ltd licence

KOCHI: The Periyar Malineekarana Virudha Samithy, a citizen's initiative against pollution of the River Periyar and the surrounding areas based in Eloor, has demanded that the license of the public sector Hindustan Insecticides Ltd at Udyogamandal be cancelled immediately.

The demand has been raised in the wake of a fire last Tuesday at the unit, which damaged the machinery and equipment at the endosulfan plant and triggered panic among the people of the locality. The Samithy has written to the Environment Ministry listing the problems being faced by the people owing to the operation of several chemical units there.
