The Hindu Business Line : AP Govt mass contact programme to be more focussed

THE Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has decided to modify his `Rajiv Palle Baata' (a mass contact programme) in order to facilitate meaningful interaction with the villagers and make the programme more focussed.

Reviewing the programme at a high-level meeting held on Saturday, Dr Reddy felt that the programme should be redesigned to infuse a sense of confidence among the people by allowing more people to talk to him during his visit to villages.

The idea was to make it more "meaningful and result-oriented," a Government release said.

In order to make the programme more accountable, he directed the officials to categorise the complaints received and prepare a calendar of follow-up actions.

Dr Reddy started the `Palle Baata' programme soon after assuming charge as Chief Minister, scraping the Janmabhoomi scheme launched by the Chandrababu Naidu Government.

Expressing views on the programme, the Chief Minister said not less than ten villages for each visit in a district could be identified. This, according to him, would help him focus more on people's problems.

"Criteria for selection of villagers for the programme should be backwardness and urgent needs," he said. "These should be the touchstone for the programme and not the comforts of the Chief Minister during the visit," Dr Reddy said.

He told the officials not to entertain any local hospitality for himself, his entourage and the media.

He felt that more people should be allowed to interact with him.

At a separate meeting, the Chief Minister reviewed the seasonal crop conditions.
