THE Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has to undertake a special project to create and establish an export market for Indian major carps to ensure remunerative prices for fish farmers, Mr J.V.H Dixitulu, the Chief Editor of Fishing Chimes, a local fisheries magazine, has said.

He was delivering the keynote address at a function organised here on Saturday to give away the Hiralal Chaudhuri Gold Medal Award, 2004, to a fish farmer from Tripura, Mr Amullya Kumar Das. The award was presented by Dr S.C Mukherjee, Vice-Chancellor of Deemed Fisheries University, Mumbai.

It was instituted by the Fishing Chimes Jaysree Charitable Trust.

Citing the recent Supreme Court verdict stating that pisciculture cannot be considered a form or part of agriculture, Mr Dixitulu said the apex court had conferred a special status upon the activity. "Unless the Government creates the necessary infrastructure to promote inlands fisheries and the necessary marketing facilities, it is difficult for farmers to get even reasonable prices. Diversification should also be encouraged," he said.
