Mumbai , July 12 THE Civil Aviation Ministry is working on a plan to upgrade 15 airports in the country to "world class." According to the Civil Aviation Minister, Mr Praful Patel, modernisation of these airports (other than the four at metros) is estimated to cost Rs 5,000 crore and would be completed by 2006. The funds would be raised by the Airports Authority of India. In an informal chat with newspersons here, the Minister said airports could also get financial support from the Inter-Institutional Group announced in the Union Budget. Referring to the modernisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports, the Minister said about 10 foreign parties have shown interest in Delhi and Mumbai where the FDI limit has been raised from 40 to 49 per cent. He said no foreign airlines would be allowed to have stake in domestic airports. Mr Patel said necessary paper work is being expedited to sign a memorandum of understanding for a greenfield airport project at Shamshabad near Hyderabad next month.
