Airlines Qatar Airways on recruitment drive Tunia Cherian George
Mumbai , July 12 QATAR Airways, the Doha-based airline that is in the midst of an expansion drive, is recruiting more Indian staff to support its growing operations. According to the Senior Manager, Commercial Operations - East, Mr Ali M. Al Rais, the airline has shortlisted both technical and non-technical staff in its latest recruitment drive in India. While many of the technical positions will be based in Doha, positions in the commercial and sales departments, besides specialised fields such as pricing, will be filled up in India as well as in the GCC (Gulf Co-Operation Council) states and Kabul. The airline, which currently flies to 52 destinations across the globe, has targeted 60 destinations by the year-end. It will launch flights to Teheran, Luxor and Istanbul during the next two weeks, and to Kabul, Melbourne and Zurich in the course of the next few months, he said. According to Mr Al Rais, the airline was recruiting Indian staff as their services had been appreciated and there was a lot of cultural closeness within the South Asian region, which was a focus area for the airline. He said nearly 20 per cent of their staff is of Indian origin. The yields out of India, he said, were "good" though this may be affected when low-cost carriers (LCCs) are allowed to operate on the Gulf sector. According to him, the arrival of LCCs such as Air Arabia would add to capacity and increase the competition for the existing players. However, Qatar Airways would continue to focus on the full-service passenger. Comparing low-cost operations within the Gulf and India, he said, the catchment area in India with its huge population was ideal for such operations. On the other hand, in the Gulf, such carriers would suffer from inadequate loads and high costs as they would have to depend on an imported work-force. Qatar Airways, which currently flies to Mumbai, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, is looking at launching operations to Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Amritsar.According to him, more and more skilled people were accounting for traffic from India. Many holidaymakers, he said, headed to places such as Casablanaca in Egypt, before proceeding to Europe. As for inbound traffic, he said, they had received good demand from Russians keen to holiday in Kochi and Goa, among other Indian destinations.
