Trade & Labour Unions Union leaders chided Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Labour Minister, Mr Babu Divakaran, has charged trade union leaders with stalling moves aimed at opening the 12-odd plantations in the hilly districts. Replying to a Calling Attention Motion in the State Assembly, the Minister said the stubborn refusal of these leaders to strike up a compromise with the respective managements had threatened to derail earnest efforts being initiated to resume operations at these plantations, which had to be closed down after they fell in worst times. According to the Minister, talks have already been held with the managements, which were only willing to reopen the plantations after tea prices began to look up in recent times. But, some workers were being coerced by vested interests to pluck tea from the closed plantations for selling clandestinely outside. The managements had demanded that this had to stop if they were to consider re-opening the plantations.
