Farm credit `Instil better recovery culture among farmers' Our Bureau
Mangalore , July 12 THE Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Karnataka Bank Ltd, Mr Anantakrishna, has said that "better recovery culture" should be instilled among farmers in the country. He was delivering the keynote address at the 23rd foundation day celebrations of the regional training college of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) in Mangalore on Monday. Stating that agriculturists are not the defaulters, he said, "Their mind is spoiled by pseudo leaders. People who create unwanted situation for the recovery of agriculture loans are the defaulters." He said that if society doesn't have the will to meet the contractual obligation, then there is no future. Training institutes should take steps to include programmes on "recovery culture". Mr Anantakrishna said that training colleges should be the centres of learning. These centres should act as the database for the organisation. Urging the trainers to understand the priorities of trainees, he said that training programmes should be branch-specific. Mr Giridhar Prabhu, former President of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industries, who was the Chief Guest, said that there is a need for setting up a database on rural areas. He urged Nabard to take initiatives in this regard. He suggested that Nabard be converted into a wholesale bank, and it should be the holding company in regional rural banks (RRBs). Mr K.M. Udupa, Managing Trustee of Bharatiya Vikas Trust, Manipal, expressed concern over the improper management of agriculture in the country. "Agriculture in India is a capital-starved sector," he said. Terming agriculture sector as the base for all other sectors, he said that the service and manufacturing sector could flourish only on this base.
