Cess on education

This with reference to "Ring fencing the cess" (Business Line, July13). The editorial rightly stresses the need for protecting the interest of the country's poor children who should be drawn to the schools by offering them at least one meal a day. Only then will the cess be justified.

Primary education for all should be the priority for all government and non-government organisations.

The outlay on education, which is only Rs 533 crore higher than the revised estimates for the previous year does not justify the promises made by the UPA Government in respect of social commitment. Moreover, the inflow of Rs 5,000 crore by way of the cess demands a revisit to the outlay figures.
