Hyderabad Goods transporters oppose service tax

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad , July 13

THE Hyderabad Goods Transport Association has criticised the Union Government's move to impose Service Tax on goods booking agents.

Terming the move unjustifiable and unwarranted, the association said it was a backdoor entry that might lead to the levy of taxes on the goods transport sector.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the officer-bearers of the association announced that a protest march would be taken out on Thursday from Vivekananda Statue on the Tank Bund to the Secretariat.

They said that a delegation would meet the Chief Minister, Dr Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and submit a memorandum asking him to intervene.

"It will be a draconian measure against which the road transporters had gone on a nationwide strike in 1997. The then Government had made a commitment that it would not impose such tax on the sector," they said.

They said that the sector had already been hit by the frequent rise in fuel prices. The sector, which is by and large unorganised, cannot afford to pay the tax. They pointed out that this tax had not been imposed on goods carried by the Railways.

"We get a net margin of around two per cent. How can we pay the 10 per cent service tax? It will ruin us," said Mr Nitinkumar, Chairman of Special Committee on Service Tax of the association.
