CITY-based Global Hospitals has conducted a rare immuno therapy on a youth suffering from bone marrow failure, considered to be a life-threatening condition.
Dr Nalini Kant Pati, hemato-oncologist of the hospital, administered ATG (anti thymocyte globuline) treatment on Kommala Suryaprakasa Rao and destroyed the antibodies responsible for the bone marrow disorder.
Referred to as `severe aplastic anaemia' in medical parlance, the autoimmune disorder results in production of antibodies that destroys the bone marrow.
"The reason why the body produces such antibodies in some persons is not known," a hospital release said.
When bone marrow does not produce red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, the patient becomes anaemic, weak and breathless.
The patient will suffer bleeding through the nose and mouth warranting regular blood transfusion. The doctors could not perform bone marrow transplantation, the conventional treatment for the disorder, as the patient's HLA (human leukocyte antigen) didn't match that of his kin.
