Travel agents not ready to reduce commission

Our Bureau

Chennai , July 14

THE Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) has reiterated its decision not to "accept" the airlines' demand to reduce the agency commission from 7 per cent to 5 per cent.

A few weeks ago, some of the European carriers reduced the travel agents' commission from 7 per cent to 5 per cent.

Mr Balbir S. Mayal, President, TAAI, told Business Line that the decision was taken at a recent meeting in Colombo. He said the market here is not ready for this reduction in agency commission.

The Indian market does not have the infrastructure compared to the developed market in the West where the management fee concept is more in vogue.

The agents and airlines will hold another round of talks later this month.
