Mumbai , July 14

THE Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has expanded its global education services by opening a new education centre in Mumbai on Wednesday to help meet growing worldwide demand.

The new education centre at Nariman Point has two classes, each with a 23-student capacity.

The five-day Diamond Grading extension classes are scheduled to start August 16 and 23.

The seven-week Graduate Diamond diploma programme is scheduled for September 16 to November 25. All classes at GIA India will be taught in English.

"India's extensive diamond heritage and status as a major diamond-trading centre make it ideally suited for GIA education," Mr Brook Ellis, Vice-President (Education) of GIA, told newsmen.

In the seven-week Diamonds programme, students can learn GIA's International Diamond Grading System and the 4Cs (colour, clarity, cut, and carat weight) directly from its creators.

In the one-week Diamond Grading class, students can gain the foundation of diamond grading.

They learn to judge and grade clarity, colour, and cut quality factors of round brilliant-cut diamonds and practice grading techniques with diamonds that were carefully selected and graded in GIA's own gem laboratory, he said.

"There is a huge untapped market for gemmological education in India a qualified gemmologist/jeweller has plenty if openings, and a GIA education can help to open the door to a good job," he said.
