Watershed project to be launched in Pudukottai dist

MADURAI: The restructured National Watershed Development Project For Rainfed Areas scheme is to be implemented in 5242 hectares in Pudukottai district.

The scheme aims at an integrated approach to the development of rainfed areas through conservation of soil and water, and a sustainable production of biomass with community participation.

According to official sources, the area covered under the scheme during 2002-03 was 526 hectares on an outlay of Rs.23.7 lakh.

In 2003-04, the area covered was 577 hectares on an outlay of Rs.25.96 lakh. Watershed associations have been formed in 12 watersheds in Arimalam block where the scheme has been under implementation, comprising members of self-help groups and user groups, the sources added.
