Jayalalithaa for package to promote bio-fuels

Our Bureau

Chennai , July 15

THE Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, has asked the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to evolve a comprehensive support package for the accelerated development of bio-fuels.

Full import duty exemption on import of technology and capital goods relating to bio-fuel projects, import duty exemption for import of non-edible oils till local supply stabilises and full excise duty exemption on bio-fuel component of petroleum products, are some of the support that the State Government has suggested.

The Tamil Nadu Government has decided to encourage cultivation of sweet sorghum, jatropha and sugar beet as a part of crop diversification programme. These are water efficient crops and offer scope for development of agro-industries to produce bio-fuels. It has also invited industrial houses to participate in the programme, and has said that it would encourage investments in this area.

The State Government "will go all out to promote these crops and the downstream industries, it is essential that the Government of India provides a comprehensive package of support for the accelerated development of bio-fuels," Ms Jayalalitha said in a letter to the Prime Minister, the text of which was released to the media here.
