THE State Government has been forced to effect a cut in the maximum assistance given out to the poor for various major surgeries from Rs 50,000 to Rs 20,000.
Responding to a calling attention motion in the State Assembly on Thursday, the Health Minister, Mr Kadavoor Sivadasan, cited financial crunch for the measure.
The budgetary allocation was prompt and sufficient for sustaining the scheme operated through the Society for Medical Assistance to the Poor. The society had Rs 1.67 crore as balance in its account while the list of applicants for funds had grown to 2,684.
KSRTC in trouble: The revenue stream of the public sector Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) may have been bolstered, with a 20 per cent increase in realisation in recent times but the transport utility was finding it difficult to keep itself afloat, according to the Transport Minister, Mr R. Balakrishna Pillai.
Replying to a calling attention motion, Mr Pillai said the budgetary support was not sufficient for executing its social responsibilities. Annual salaries and pension outgo amounted to Rs 250 crore while another Rs 34 crore was given away in various concessions.
Relief to farmers: The Agriculture Minister, Ms K.R. Gowri, said the State Government had provided Rs 68 crore as assistance to farmers who had suffered losses on account of natural calamities.
Replying to a submission, she said the Government was aware of the gravity of the situation in which farmers were finding it difficult to clear loans
