Policy-makers told to follow Chinese socio-economic model

Prof Amartya Sen

Kolkata , July 15

NOBLE laureate Professor Amartya Sen has advised Indian policy-makers to follow the Chinese socio-economic growth model to improve the quality of life, in general, and also provide India with a competitive edge in the global market.

Prof Sen feels, for achieving the type of success that China has mastered, "one does not have to go through Chinese political history''. Incidentally, he said one had to notice that China has already stopped "grumbling" over globalisation. In fact, they were now ready to accept competition.

Prof Sen was delivering a lecture on `Democracy and the future of India', organised here on Wednesday by the Institute of Development Studies, in collaboration with the West Bengal Government. He advised parties in power to have patience to pay attention to public opinion and media criticism, as he felt this was required in the interest of preserving democracy.

He said that democracy did not only mean controlling the State power through conducting votes. This was one of the criteria for ensuing the existence of democracy. Peoples' participation in decision making process, right to speech and voting without fear had to be ensured.

He also cautioned policy markers to be careful about the negative aspect of decentralisation of the planning process. Prof Sen said, "I am confident that China will have a multi-party functional democracy before long."
