He is the first Asian to receive the medal, given in recognition of his outstanding contribution to earth observation science and remote sensing applications during the inaugural ceremony of the ISPRS Congress at Istanbul on July 14, an ISRO release said. The release said during his tenure at ISRO, Dr Kasturirangan led the Indian space programme and remote sensing to great heights and had put the capabilities of Indian IRS satellites on the global map. Indian imageries today have a significant global market share. Apart from the concept of a GIS map-based spatial data infrastructure for developmental uses, it said he enabled several innovative techniques in image processing, analysis and interpretation and also developed unique applications of remote sensing for India and developing nations.
