GIVING a big thrust to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the South, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has decided to start four industrial clusters in four States.
These clusters, coming up in Pondicherry, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, would comprise SMEs with a turnover of less than Rs 15 crore, a CII spokesperson told Business Line.
While Pondicherry would house a plastic component cluster, Hyderabad and Bangalore would have mixed engineering clusters. A rubber processing cluster would be set up in Kerala.
The focus of the mixed cluster would be to achieve increased productivity through efficient use of resources and also maintain good quality standards.
The heterogeneous cluster approach would help SMEs to increase their productivity, improve quality and become cost-effective.
The CII spokesperson said a heterogeneous cluster had already been started in Ambattur industrial estate in Chennai last month.
In addition to these clusters, the apex industry association would start 25 more clusters across the country for technology upgradation and modernisation of SMEs.
The spokesperson said the cluster project followed the success of a pilot scheme at Mohali, Chandigarh.
"The CII will help the SMEs join the cluster programme with financial aid from Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI)," he said.
