Birla will: Legal heavyweights get ready

Our Bureau

Kolkata July 17

ALL of a sudden, it seems to be the sunshine season for top civil lawyers and barristers practising at the Calcutta High Court, thanks to the impending legal battle over the controversial last will of Priyamvada Birla.

According to informed High Court sources, the challengers of the will, the Birla clan members, and the defending side of Mr Rajendra S. Lodha, have signed up the crème de la crème of the legal fraternity in city.

It is learnt that groups of crack lawyers, both for and against, are now working overtime to prepare the initial briefs, and have been retained with handsome fees said to range in the five-figure mark. Some of the big names being talked about are Mr Siddhartha Sankar Ray, Mr S.K. Mookerjee, Mr M. Sudipto Sarkar, Mr Jayanta Mitra, Mr Anindya Mitra and Mr Saktinath Mukherjee.

Meanwhile, the much-awaited move by Mr R.S. Lodha to seek a probate of the Priyamvada Birla will at the Judge's Court, Alipore, today did not materialise. Court sources say the matter may now go to the High Court, expectedly on Monday, considering the heavyweight battery of lawyers hired to work on the case.
