Hardware Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Electronics hardware export up 37%: ESC Our Bureau
New Delhi , July 18 ELECTRONICS hardware exports have registered a record growth of over 37 per cent in rupee terms and 44.6 per cent in dollar terms during 2003-04 to touch Rs 7,700 crore compared to Rs 5,600 crore the previous year, the IT export promotion body, ESC, has said. "It is heartening to note that over the years, exports from electronics hardware sector are increasing and given proper encouragement and direction, it is possible to accelerate the growth manifold, keeping this sector in the same league as that of the software sector," said Mr D. K. Sareen, Executive Director, Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC). "There could be various reasons attributed to this increase such as increase in the viability of manufacturing capacities, enhanced efforts to adopt newer technologies as per global requirements by Indian companies and consistent scouting of newer destinations for exports," he said. "To sustain this effort, it is necessary to continue with the fiscal incentives given to exports from the country since such incentives are motivating factors for relocation of industries and for making aggressive strides towards exports," said the ESC statement. The ESC study revealed that solid growth in the export was fuelled by the computer hardware segment. Export in this segment has grown at 162 per cent in rupee terms and 175 per cent in dollar terms. also has displayed a steady growth at 56.46 per cent , rising from Rs 2,400 crore ($496 million) in 2002-03 to Rs 3,755 crore ($816 million). Export of consumer electronics showed a growth of 10 per cent , to Rs 825 crore ($179 million) against Rs 750 crore ($155 million). The export of telecom equipment and cables, however, declined by 67 per cent (65.28 in dollar terms) , ESC said adding that it was looking into the reasons that led to the decline to suggest remedial measures to the industry.
