Environment Environment: Study finds firms keen to boost exports Our Bureau
New Delhi , July 18 A recent FICCI survey assessing the interest companies in the environment sector have in exports has found that many of them are interested in promoting their products, technologies and services overseas. The survey was conducted among 187 leading companies across the environment spectrum, with a focus on key areas such as water and wastewater treatment, air pollution control, waste management, renewable energy, recycling and recovery, climate change, forestry and environmental management systems. A majority of respondents, almost 91 per cent, expressed interest in promoting their business internationally through global platforms such as participation in international delegations and exhibitions. As per the survey, 44 per cent of the respondents felt their participation in international delegations would be an effective way to promote their business networking for exports. The survey revealed that the Indian environment sector is significantly interested in expanding its reach beyond the domestic market. Almost 46 per cent of the companies were eager to showcase their products, 27 per cent wanted to promote their technology and another 27 per cent looked forward to showcasing services provided by them in overseas markets. The survey demolishes the popular notion that India needs to outsource all environment technologies and products from abroad. In fact, the Indian environmental sector has strengths that can be marketed abroad. Further, it states that Indian companies have expertise in a wide cross-section of sub-sectors. Regarding geographical preference for exports, respondents expressed interest in different regions of the world. About 70 per cent of the companies surveyed already have business tie-ups in the UK, the US, Malaysia, Germany, Russia, Austria, Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kenya, and Tanzania. However, they expressed their interest in expanding geographical reach. West Asia was the prime region of interest for environment sector businesses, followed by South-East Asia, Central Asia, Africa, South Asia, Europe, South America, North America, Australia and New Zealand, while no specific regional preference was shown by 3 per cent of the companies surveyed.
