Telecommunications Tata Tele to invest Rs 417 cr in Karnataka; aims at 6 lakh subscribers Our Bureau
Bangalore , July 20 TATA Teleservices will invest Rs 417 crore and roll out its services across 100 new towns during the current fiscal. The chief operating officer for Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Mr Prabhat Pani, told presspersons on Tuesday that the company hopes to increase the number of subscribers to around 6 lakh before the end of this fiscal. It currently has 1.9-lakh subscribers and 250 new cell sites will be added to strengthen its network and boost coverage in the State. Mr Pani said the fixed wireless product (FWP) is gaining more numbers with the number of subscribers in Karnataka being 1.3 lakh as of now, while 60,000 are mobile subscribers. "Our fixed wireless product, which has the benefit of speedy installation, and our CDMA mobile are available at highly competitive rates and hence are popular among residents and small business customers," he said. Mr Pani did not disclose the revenues of Karnataka's operations but said the company expects to triple the revenues during the current fiscal. The roll out of the services in new towns will include the coverage of Hassan-Hubli-Bellary and the Mangalore-Karwar highways. Tata Teleservices is also expanding its coverage in all the six States where it is operating. It will launch its services in 10 more States before the end of 2004. Tata Indicom, the Tata Teleservices brand, is also focusing on new services including push-to-talk service.
