Education Kerala Govt directive on school structures Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, has directed officials to expedite repair and maintenance of schools and anganwadis and ensure safety of the pupils. The Chief Minister issued the directive at a conference convened here to discuss safety of school structures in view of the fire accident that occurred at Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. The conference was told that as many as 212 Government schools and 100 aided schools in the State had thatched roofs. Only 50 per cent of the anganwadis had their own buildings, with the rest operating from rented buildings or temporary sheds. The conference resolved to build concrete buildings for schools and permanent buildings for anganwadis. For this purpose, special committees will function in each district under the Collector. While the maintenance of Government institutions will be supervised by panchayats and parent - teacher associations, managements of unaided schools will be directed to take up repairs on a time bound basis. The committee will inspect the buildings and decide priorities and ensure safety.
