IA sees surge in passenger traffic to Tirupati

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , July 22

JUST two flights after launching a promotional scheme, the traffic on the Hyderabad-Tirupati route of Indian Airlines has trebled.

The scheme, launched on July 16 along with the Metro Non-Metro scheme, cut the fare by 36 per cent from Rs 3,390 to Rs 2,180 for the economy class. IA runs A320 aircraft twice a week to Tirupati. The three-month-long promotional scheme will end on October 15.

Occupancy, which hovered around 50-60 in June, shot up to 146, the maximum an A320 can carry, a top IA official said.

"The idea is to pep up the traffic during the off season," the official said.

The public sector carrier's service to the temple town has been facing tremendous competition ever since Deccan Air, the low-fair private sector airline, launched its services. Deccan operates a daily flight from the State capital.
