The Government will accord priority to agriculture and traditional industries in the medium term and plans to come up with a scheme for their revival.

Thiruvananthapuram , July 23

THE State Cabinet has decided to direct District Collectors to dissociate themselves from revenue recovery measures sought to be initiated by co-operative banks against farm loans advanced by them.

Announcing this in reply to a submission in the State Assembly on Friday, the Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, said the State Government had been receiving reports about co-operative banks having initiated recovery proceedings in many parts of the State.

The Government decision would be binding on loans granted not just by the co-operative banks but other sources as well, the Chief Minister added.

Top priority: The Government will accord priority to agriculture and traditional industries in the medium term and plans to come up with a scheme for their revival.

According to the Chief Minister, the Government was sympathetic to the cause of the livelihood issues of the common man. Replying to a resolution moved by a member, he said a meeting of all stakeholders would be convened to discuss problems being faced by the traditional sector.

A meeting of the high-level Plantation Labour Committee (PLC) is also due next month.

Kerala House: There was no immediate plan to outsource some of the services at the Kerala House, New Delhi, to private service providers.

Replying to a submission, the Chief Minister reiterated that employees of Kerala House would be taken into confidence to evolve a consensus on the need for toning up services. The Government had in fact received a number of complaints with regard to services such as catering, housekeeping and reception provided by Kerala House.

Bus bays: The Public Works Minister, Dr M.K. Muneer, informed the House that as many as 450 bus bays would be constructed along National Highways and other important roads in the State.

Replying to questions, the Minister said bus bays were under construction in the cities of Kollam, Kochi and Kozhikode as part of the urban development programme being implemented with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

In Thiruvananthapuram, 90 bays would be constructed as part of the Capital City Improvement Project.

High Court Bench: Earlier, the Assembly adopted a resolution requesting the Centre to set up a High Court Bench in Thiruvananthapuram.

In his reply to the motion on resolution, the Information Minister, Mr M.M. Hassan, said the State Government had represented before the Union Law Ministry and the Chief Justice of Kerala to put the issue in perspective at many times in the recent past.

It had also made it known that adequate facility was available in Thiruvananthapuram for setting up the bench. Lately, the Chief Minister had written to the Union Law Minister, Mr H.R. Bharadwaj, to press the demand. Later, the House adopted the resolution.
