Railway employees' plea

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Southern Railway Employees Sangh observed Wednesday as `Demand Day' to press for a slew of demands.

A spokesman said here that the sangh had demanded the appointment of the Sixth Pay Commission and an announcement on promotions promised by the Divisional Railway Manager. It also wanted speedy implementation of cadre restructuring, which was accepted by the Railway Board.

Other demands included revising upwards interest on provident fund to 12 per cent and fixing working hours of the railway gatekeepers to eight hours a day.

Coaching in agri sciences

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Agricultural Association proposes to organise a two-month coaching class for those who have applied for the post of Agricultural Assistants through the Public Service Commission.

An official spokesman said here that short-term courses on agriculture-related subjects would also be conducted. Teachers qualified in agricultural sciences had been commissioned for anchoring the classes. Those who complete the programme will receive certificates approved by the Union Government.

KIMS centre in Bahrain

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) will set up a medical centre in Bahrain. Called the KIMS Bahrain Medical Centre, the new facility will start operations on July 25, says a KIMS press release.

The facility in Bahrain will initially provide only day-care facilities through its outpatient departments and 10 speciality clinics, says the release. Besides, it will also have a pharmacy, a speech therapy centre and other diagnostic facilities, the release adds. The ultimate objective is to turn the medical centre into a full-fledged hospital with 20 beds, and surgical and obstetrics departments, the press release says.
