TN farmers demand to write off farm loans

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The Federation of Farmers of the Cauvery Old Ayacut Areas of 17 irrigation channels has urged the Government to write off all farm loans.

The Federation, comprising channels in Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Namakkal and Erode, in a meeting held at Tiruchi recently, passed a resolution saying that deferment of recovery of loans was not enough as the farmers were faced with acute distress and that all farm loans should be written off.

The meeting pleaded that the Government should explore the feasibility of releasing at least 5,000 cusecs of water from the Mettur reservoir to enable the farmers in the old ayacut areas to take up cultivation work this season.

The federation has further urged the Government to expedite farm power connections in these districts as has been done in the core delta districts.

It has also pleased for early linkage of rivers. The meeting resolved to take out a rally and stage a demonstration on July 30, to press their demands.
